An exciting change has occurred at our school. A new autism program opened at Bauer! We created two classrooms for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We have an upper elementary classroom and a lower elementary classroom with a maximum of seven students per room. Below are some questions and answers to clarify what this program is about.
What is ASD and why are special classrooms needed?
ASD is a developmental disability that affects socialization, communication, repetitive behaviors, and sensory integration. It is a spectrum disorder meaning that students can have varying degrees from mild to severe. Some of these students need a higher level of special education support than our general education classrooms can provide.
Why was Bauer Elementary chosen to house the program?
Previously our students with ASD attended classrooms within Ottawa County. Increasing numbers of students requiring specialized ASD program resulted in Hudsonville Public Schools looking to start their own classrooms. When considering our elementary schools in the district, Bauer was a good fit as far as space and staff capacity.
How will this affect my child?
The students in this program will all have the opportunity to spend time during the day with their same-age peers. This can include recess, specials, or classroom activities. Staff and student training will be available to make this opportunity successful for all involved. Trainings may include classroom lessons and Peer-to-Peer support. Research has shown that both students with ASD and general education students can benefit from inclusion activities.
Your student may come home with questions and stories about their experiences with their friends in the ASD classroom. If you are unable to answer the questions or have concerns, please do not hesitate to contact myself or the classroom teacher.
