Mr. Meersma has now been at Bauer for 4 weeks. He is coming from a school with 700 students (in Fowlerville) and is enjoying getting to work in a smaller school where he can get to know the students better. He has been working on helping staff and students develop common language for behaviors and attitudes at school, especially in areas such as the playground, cafeteria and when lining up.

    a. RecentEvents
    1. Fall Book Fair
The November Book Fair brought in $3,600 in Scholastic Dollars. We have decided to divy this up amongst the Bauer teachers; each teacher will receive $140 to spend in their classroom. We have saved $500 to use for future needs. We will earmark the profits from the Spring Scholastic BOGO Book Fair for the Bauer library.
    2. Conference Dinners & Holiday Luncheon
Conference dinners are almost entirely donation based (thank you Bauer families!) but the Holiday lunch is pulled from the BPC budget.
iii. Secret Santa’s Shop
The Secret Santa shop was a great success this year! Jessica Steigenga and her crew did an amazing job coordinating this fun event. If you have any suggestions for next year’s Shop or if you’d like to volunteer, you may contact the BPC at bauerparentclub@gmail.com or Jessica Steigenga at jmsteigenga@yahoo.com. Thank you!
b. UpcomingEvents&Opportunities
  1. School Supply Restock | January 21-31
As we approach the middle of the school year, classroom supplies start to run low. Because of this, the BPC is supporting a School Supply Restock. Please check for the paper note or on the Bauer Parent Club Facebook page for a link to each teacher’s supply list. Thank you for considering!
  2. District Wide BPC Board Meeting | January 22
The BPC board members will be attending a district wide meeting on January 22. If you have any questions or concerns you’d like us to bring up at the meeting, please contact us. Thank you!
  3. Father-Daughter Dance | February 23
The planning committee has been hard at work planning a night
of Glitz and Glamour for all the girls at Bauer! Each girl is invited to bring a special guest for a night of dancing, photos, prizes, and snacks! Please let Mrs. Opple know if you need any help in attending this event (dress, ticket cost, etc.) We would like every girl at Bauer to feel welcome!
iv. Next BPC Meeting | March 12
D. Staff Scoop
  • ●  Ashley Scholma was the staff representative at our meeting this week. She reports the staff is grateful for both the conference and Holiday lunches.
  • ●  Alison Johnson (P.E. teacher) is working on surveying Bauer students about playground needs (balls, jump ropes, etc.). Each student will take a survey in STEAM and results will be provided to the BPC. We will then purchase new playground equipment for Bauer.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Dear Bauer Families,
It is with great joy and sadness that I enter retirement from public education after working with energetic, uninhibited, and spontaneous children for over 36 years.  The program last evening was a metaphor of my career.  Hundreds of student voices coming together in one clear resounding song signified our children that come from diverse backgrounds and create one classroom and school family that takes on unique and obvious character traits.
The props and instruments our little ones showcased are like the academic, social, and emotional skills we intentionally equip each child so that they are contributing members of our school, community, and society.
As witnessed by the audience, every community has the serious, silly, shy, confident, humorous (the list goes on!) member.  Watching our individual students on stage made clear the necessity of diversity of personality and talent.  How blessed we are to have talents and personality as many, and unique, as our children.
Mrs. VanRijs and Mr. Bowman represented the adults that guide, prepare, and nurture us to be the very best we can be.  Leaders that give us multiple opportunities to demonstrate what we are capable of, even when it means starting a song over again!
Lastly, the audience is symbolic of our village.  The quote by Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has", has hung in my office for as long as I can recall.  Each and every one present contributes to changing the world.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me the awesome privilege of serving at your pleasure for over three years.  I will miss the students, staff, families, and friends of Bauer Elementary,

Best regards,

Julie VanBergen
